Review & Comparison Policy

How we evaluate outdoor gear using material science and specification research.

Comparison Criteria

We compare sleeping systems and shelters by evaluating objective physical metrics provided by suppliers alongside standard material properties:

Fabrics & Coatings
Evaluating tear strength and waterproofing through denier (D) count, silicone (silnylon), and polyurethane (PU) ratings.
Insulation Efficiency
Contextualizing ASTM F3340-18 R-values and down fill-power against expected night temperatures.
Structural Geometry
Analyzing pole materials (aluminum vs fiberglass) and vestigial coverage relative to total packed weight.

Evidence Boundaries & Method Limitations

Field & Canvas reviews are based on technical specification research and desk analysis. We do not conduct custom laboratory testing or controlled field trials. Published scores and comparative rankings reflect structured assessments of published manufacturer specs, sizing data, and material properties, rather than hands-on endurance tests.
